The High Court

About Us

The functioning of the High Court is part and parcel of the jurisdiction of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) and is governed by the provisions of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (Saint Christopher and Nevis) Act Cap 3.11. The functions of the High Court are executed in conjunction with local government ministries in each respective territory of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).  The judicial aspects of the court’s work are directly administered by the ECSC. Meanwhile, the administrative and registry services are carried out by our locally appointed staff under the leadership of a Registrar.

In the case of St. Kitts and Nevis, these operations fall within the purview of the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs. Together, we provide the necessary administrative and legal support for the functioning of the High Court and the Appeal Court when it sits in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

What We Do

Key Services & Responsibilities

Court Administration for the High Court of St Kitts and Nevis; as well as Court of  Appeal cases from the High Court and Magistrate courts of St. Christopher and Nevis. These services include: 

 

The High Court Registry provides the following services: 

  1. Court Administration for the High Court of St Kitts and Nevis; as well as Court of

Appeal cases from the High Court and Magistrate courts of St. Christopher and  Nevis. These services include: 

1.1. Making arrangements for and scheduling hearings and trials 

1.2. Monitoring the process of moving cases through the court system to completion 

1.3. Executing service of process to interested parties and unrepresented litigants 

1.4. Notifying unrepresented parties or their legal representatives of the dates of hearings and trials and dates of delivery of judgments 

1.5. Collating and providing information on the status and disposition of court matters 

1.6. Maintaining a digitized case management system in the E-Litigation Portal and the JEMS (for matters not on the e-litigation portal) 

1.7. Acting as liaison between parties and the Court 

1.8. Distributing copies of judgments to parties 

1.9. Preparing and maintaining juror lists 

1.10. Facilitating judicial sale of property 

1.11. Facilitating the administration of oaths 

1.12. Facilitating legal representation for unrepresented accused in criminal matters 

1.13. Facilitating enforcement procedures such as writs of seizure and sale 

1.14. Facilitating the bail process 

1.15. Collecting fees and making payments 

 

These services include: 

 

2.1. Facilitating and coordinating training of mediators in conjunction with the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court 

2.2 Maintaining a roster of mediators 

2.3 Scheduling and coordinating mediation sessions in person and in online platform 

2.4 Facilitating collection of fees and payment of mediators 

 

These services include: 

 

3.1. Accepting payments for and processing documents in accordance with  the Legal Profession Act (e.g., Practicing Certificates, Certificates of  Enrolment and Certificate of Good Standing). 

3.2. Facilitating calls to the Bar and maintaining a Register of Barristers and Solicitors. 

3.3. Receiving the physical documents for the newly appointed Notaries Public from Headquarters and facilitating the swearing of the oath. A register is kept. 

3.4. Act as local facilitators for E-Litigation Portal registrations. 

 

These services include:

 

4.1. Maintaining public records of the Registers of Deeds; Births Deaths and Marriages; Wills and Probates 

4.2. Facilitating registration of Deeds

We do not have a Notary Public at the High Court Registry. However, we have Commissioners for Oath who will be happy to assist you when appropriate.
